The Health and Wellbeing Ambassadors (HWA) is a professional development opportunity for students passionate about promoting health and wellbeing at UNSW.

HWAs work with the UNSW Health Promotion Unit (HPU) to co-design and deliver health and wellbeing initiatives that are informed by student needs, perspectives and experiences. Students from any discipline are welcome to get involved!

Students will gain experience in:

  • Peer education 
  • Health advocacy
  • Campaign management
  • Communications and content creation
  • Event management
  • Leadership

What roles are available?

We're recruiting for a number of paid (executive) and volunteer casual positions. Roles are AHEGS accredited. The vacancies are as follows:

HWA Assistants (Executive Team)

The HWA assistants are 12-month paid positions responsible for coordinating each area of the health portfolio, including:

  • Mental Health
  • Sexual Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)
  • Lifestyle (e.g. nutrition, physical activity and general health)
  • Water Safety
  • Marketing

Mental Health is a key portfolio in the HWA program. It is led by the Student Minds Assistant and supported by a volunteer committee. Although hours may vary, you are expected to commit 20 hours per week in this role.

Student Minds Assistant (Executive Team)

Student Minds Assistant coordinates mental health-related initiatives and assists with this across all health areas, to:

  • Reduce stigma related to mental health
  • Improve mental health literacy of their peers
  • Increase awareness of mental health issues
  • Encourage help-seeking behaviour
  • Increase awareness of UNSW and external mental health services
  • Promote positive psychological resilience
  • Be the voice for a student experiences, needs and perspectives in mental health.

Student Minds works closely with the UNSW Health Promotion Unit and Psychology and Wellness. Their work is guided by the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

The Student Minds Assistant leads Student Minds and its team of core volunteers, and is a paid role. Although hours may vary, you are expected to commit 20 hours per week.

HWA Volunteers (General & Student Minds)

HWA Volunteers are engaged in 12-month positions that will support in initiatives including activations, workshops and campaign planning and delivery. As a volunteer, you can work across all areas of the health portfolio or take further training to work more closely in certain health areas as peer educators. 

HWA volunteers are coordinated by the HWA Executive Team and your contributions will be officially recognised through the Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS).
