It is compulsory for commencing Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) recipients to participate in the IAP before the Term starts. The Program is coordinated by the International Student Compliance Team. It includes general information sessions and familiarises new students with the demands of the Australian academic environment with an emphasis on academic skills needed to make a smooth transition to study in Australia.

The IAP covers Academic English and Communication skills including written, oral and learning components and you will also learn about managing your studies at a postgraduate level. The program further provides you with library skills, social activities including an excursion, and introduces you to the required eLearning platforms to be successful in your studies.

The IAP includes participation in and the attendance at Orientation Week and the International Student Welcome.

Term 1, 2024 - Monday, 15 January 2024, 10:00am to Friday, 9 February 2024 - Recommended Arrival Date is Monday, 8 January 2024.

Cultural transition

Building cultural competencies for student life.

Cultural transition is very important in your successful orientation to university and settling into the wider community.

This module comprises of campus and community orientation, Australian cultural awareness, personal skills to succeed, and IAP connect discussion sessions.

English language assessment

IAP students undertake an English diagnostic test, which includes a writing component, and feedback on students’ current level of English language skills will be provided.

Depending on the result, students may be referred to attend relevant workshops and make use of online resources to improve their English. On a needs basis, one-on-one consultations can be booked with the Academic Skills Team.

Academic learning skills

Many students require guidance in preparing academic work because of unfamiliarity with appropriate genre and language.

This module includes academic skills overview, orientation to a specific academic environment and assessment types, institution perspectives and study requirements, including critical analysis, analytical thinking, referencing, academic writing and presenting.

Library and online learning tools

The Library Skills module will give you an introduction to the UNSW Library and the online services and resources available to you. The emphasis is on practical skills development that will facilitate impactful research in support of your scholarly output.

    eLearning Technology

    UNSW utilises a suite of centrally provided eLearning technologies that support learning and teaching. This module will introduce you to:
