How do fish affect dry eyes?

Published: 4 October 2017

Researchers at UNSW Australia (The University of New South Wales) and the School of Optometry and Vision Science are seeking volunteer research participants to learn about the effect of a commercially available dietary supplementation with a combination of flaxseed oil, borage oil and fish oil omega-3 fatty acids on eye comfort, compared to an inactive control capsule.

Would the research project be a good fit for me?

The study might be a good fit for you if you:

  • are 18 years of ageor over and have symptoms of dry eye;
  • have not used dietary supplements containing any polyunsaturated fatty acids such as fish oil, evening primrose oil or linseed oil in the last 12 weeks;
  • have no known allergies to any of the study product ingredients;
  • have not had eye surgery in the last 6 months, do not currently wear contact lenses and have not worn contact lenses in the last 30 days;
  • have not used any category S3 eye medication or medications that can affect the eyes (including antihistamines) in the last 12 weeks;
  • do not have epilepsy or migraines exacerbated by strobe-like flashing lights;
  • are willing to ingest the study capsules as instructed and comply with the study visit schedule.

What would happen if I took part in the research project?

If you decide to take part you would:

  • be asked to attend 3 visits over 3 months – each visit lasts approx. 1hour;
  • be randomly given (like flipping a coin) either the test capsule (combination of flaxseed oil, borage oil and fish oil omega-3 fatty acids) oran inactive control capsule to ingest by mouth 2 to 3 times daily throughout the study;
  • be asked to undergo evaluations similar to those at a regular Optometrist visit, and complete questionnaires about your eye comfort, diet and usage of the study product.

Will I be paid to take part in the research project?

The study capsules will be provided free of charge during the study and you will be compensated with a $20 gift card per visit for travel and refreshment costs. Upon completion of the study, all participants will receive a 3 month complimentary supply of the commercially available dietary supplement (Lacritec) evaluated in the study.
