SPEERS Mentoring Program
Who can join this Peer Mentoring Program?
Supportive Peers – SPEERS – for students attending as a first year undergraduate student and who have a disability or mental health condition.
The aim of SPEERS is to help break down barriers that students with either a disability or mental health conditions face when making the transition into university life and completing their university education.
SPEERS assists UNSW to better support first year students who are registered with Disability Services and/or who identify as having a probable mental health condition by matching mentees with a mentor.
A Mentee will be matched with a SPEERS Mentor. A SPEERS Mentor is an advanced year student who has a shared experience of disability or an understanding of mental health conditions either personally or through a family member or friend.
A SPEERS Mentor provides social support. Mentors are selected by their ability to pass on their knowledge and experience of University to first year undergraduate students. Mentors can support first years with their studies, accessing student services and other supports at UNSW.
The SPEERS Mentoring program is flexible for Mentees to participate in and includes one-to-one meet ups, online correspondence such as emails and a private Facebook group.
