Adjusting to life as a Sydneysider

STUDENT INTERVIEWS

By Matt Chan, International Student (onshore)

To suddenly move to a different country and get yourself to ‘fit-in’ is always a tricky process. It is easy for one to get lost in the thick of things since there are so many factors to consider. That being said, I hope these tidbits and lessons from my own experience of adjusting to life as a Sydneysider can help you get a good start to your journey.

Familiar Faces

For Filipinos, the concept of family is a big thing; and in many ways I think it is for you too. Try to reach out to people who have a similar cultural background as you. It’s a great way of finding support whenever you feel homesick. As a pro-tip, get familiar with the city and ask about the different places each nationality resides in. E.g. A lot of the Filipino community members reside in the Western Sydney areas such as Blacktown and Rooty Hill.

New Vibe

Knowing about different cultures is a must when you want your adjustment in Sydney to be smooth. I suggest you keep an open-mind and your energy on high!  A good way to start is to join organizations within the university such as the Cultural Mentor Program. There are so many places to explore in the city of Sydney and it’s best to get a NSW Photo Card so that you can safely leave your passport at home.

On The Go

Oh boy, I hope you’re in tiptop shape because living in Sydney requires loads of travelling. Places are usually far away from each other, and in most cases you would need to take the public transportation. Get an Opal Card when you arrive in Sydney; it’s a lifesaver for sure. On the bright side, public transportation here is fast and punctual!

Belly Up

Because Sydney is a melting pot of different cultures, there are so many delicious foods to try out. I would highly recommend that after trying a few landmark places in the city, go around to the communal areas or hole-in-the-wall places for each nationality. That way, you get to experience authentic dining.

The Wine & The Wave

As the saying goes: When in Rome, do what the Romans do. Sydney is famous for its beautiful beaches and tasty wine. You can never become a true Sydney-sider without at least visiting the vineyards of Hunter Valley a visit, and taking a few surfing lessons in Manly. It’s one of those rites of passage for new visitors. That being said, surfs up and drink up (responsibly) mate!

Final Word

I know it’s still a bit daunting for you to just upend the lifestyle you’re used to living back home. But if you embrace the change, I guarantee you that it ain’t so bad after all. Live curious fam!
