A day in the life of a first-year domestic postgraduate student
STUDENT INTERVIEWS
By Nikhil Sodhi, Master of Commerce (Finance)
Post-Graduate life at the University of New South Wales is one of the glorious chapters of your life. Each day is unique and exuberant in its own way. It is important to enjoy each day as it comes as you only experience it once. A typical day in the life of a post-graduate student looks like this:
8am
The cool morning breeze of Sydney always makes you want to tuck yourself back into bed and enjoy another hour of sleep. However, you can’t enjoy the morning breeze with the bright sun gazing upon you without getting out of bed. Once out of bed I get ready for the daily hustle, with my classes starting at 10am. Having a wholesome Aussie breakfast and then sipping on some coffee, whilst, admiring the view from my balcony is how I round off my early morning before class.
10am
It’s focus time, classes can vary from anywhere between 1.5 hours to 3 hours. Staying focused during online classes often becomes tough, but, with amazing professors and interactive classes, you’ll be sure to learn tons of stuff. Meeting new people during classes while working together on questions or case studies is always loads of fun.
1pm
After finishing off the first half of the day with some studies, I like to lean back and relax before entering into study mode once again. To rejuvenate my mind, I go out for an afternoon walk or jog on the streets of Sydney. There are tons of shops in each suburb, ranging from restaurants to fashion to supermarkets. Grabbing a bite on my way home is how I cap off the afternoon before heading back home for some more classes.
3pm
Another round of classes where you’ve got lots to learn. After finishing off with your daily classes it’s important to sit back for an hour and revise what you’ve learned, before unwinding for the day. On most days I prefer to revise with my study group. It’s a great way to catch up with your friends and also stay on track with your studies.
5pm
The fun part of university life has to be the societies. That’s where you get to meet and network with various people while having a good time. I attend my online meetings where our society plans for events to organise and the work to be done by each department. I work in the marketing team, where we discuss and plan on various marketing strategies to be employed for our events. Societies provide a rounded learning experience while enjoying time with your peers.
7pm
If you’re a foodie you’re sure to find plenty of great local food on offer in Sydney for dinner. After having my dinner, I make an effort to complete my household chores for the day, this keeps me active especially with the ongoing lockdown. Before having some alone time, I like to work on my university assignments for some time.
10pm
Before heading off to bed I like to watch a sitcom, web series, or any new movie on Netflix. This helps me relax after an action-packed day and get ready for the next.
My biggest tip for first-year students
For those who are starting university, I would say that at times university life may seem a bit overwhelming with all the studies. However, with amazing professors and mentors available you won’t feel lost and there will always be someone to help. There are also loads of activities, events, and new experiences in store for everyone, which will surely make your time at UNSW a memorable experience.
