Welcome to Mentor AI support hub

Mentor AI is an AI-powered tool designed to enhance your confidence with spoken communication skills. Here you can learn more about the pilot, find answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) and where to get help.

Please note, Mentor AI is only available for students enrolled in eligible courses for Term 2, 2025. If your course is eligible, your lecturer would have introduced Mentor AI in your lecture or Moodle site. If you are unsure about whether you are eligible for a licence, please email [email protected]. We will endeavour to respond to you within 2 business days.

What can I do with Mentor AI?

Practice speaking on a topic for 1 to 10 minutes. When you are ready, start recording your speech and Mentor AI will analyse the recording and provide you with feedback on content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. It can also generate questions in a similar way of a Q&A session to help you practice speaking on your feet like conversations, interviews and viva voces.

You can make up to 20 recordings this term (until 28 August 2025 11:59PM). Real time feedback and interactive prompts make Mentor AI a useful tool to improve your speaking skills and enhance your public speaking and communication confidence.

Step 3: Check if you can access other UNSW sites such as myUNSW or Moodle using Single Sign On (SSO) Portal. If you cannot access myUNSW, please contact IT Helpdesk. You are likely experiencing an SSO issue.

Step 4: If you are still unable to access Mentor AI, please email the pilot team at [email protected]

Who can use Mentor AI?

Only a small number of courses are participating in the pilot and will have access to the solution. If you are enrolled in an eligible course, your lecturer will have introduced Mentor AI in class or on Moodle. If you are unsure about whether you are eligible to use Mentor AI, please email [email protected]

Please note that your access is tied to your zID and the piloted courses. Consequently, if you withdraw from a piloted course, you will lose your access and your licence will be reallocated.

How can I record my speech?

The recording button is at the bottom of the Mentor AI landing page. Please click on it to start recording your speech.

I can’t record my speech. The recording button is not active or not appearing?

The "record" button may take a moment to load. Please check your internet connection. You can try refreshing the page or logging out and back in. Make sure your recording is under 10 minutes and you have not exceeded your allowance of 20 recordings this term (remember a deleted recording counts towards your recording limit).

How to record

How long can I record for?

You can record for up to 10 minutes per recording. It is recommended that you speak for at least 3 minutes so that the AI has enough content to generate feedback on. If you need more time, you can break your script into sections and record with multiple turns.

How many recordings or turns do I have?
You can submit up to 20 recordings across the term (until 28 August 11:59PM). A deleted recording will still contribute to your recording limit.

How do I delete a recording?

  1. Go to "Recordings".
  2. Find the recording that you want to delete.
  3. Click on the bin icon.
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the recording by selecting "Yes, delete recording".

Please note that a deleted recording will contribute to your limit of 20 recordings.

Questions about feedback

How do I access my feedback?

It takes a few minutes for your recording to be processed. When your feedback is ready, a green tick will appear on the completed recordings panel to the left. Click on this and you will be taken to the summary page.

If your recording is not processed after 10 minutes, please provide details (such as the timestamp of the recording and your zID) to [email protected]

I need help understanding my feedback

Your feedback is divided into two parts: a summary page detailing your overall performance and a feedback page which provides suggestions on areas such as ideation and development, organisation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary.

You can also refer to the resources page in the platform, which covers aspects of long-form oral presentation that may have been referred to in your feedback.

If you would like further assistance with interpreting your feedback, please e-mail [email protected].

The Q&A function is not loading

Check that your microphone is connected. There is a line that moves when your voice is being detected. If you have spoken for less than 30 seconds, the AI may not have enough material to ask follow-up questions on. Continue your speech for slightly longer.

If you still cannot see the questions, you can wait 5 seconds and try again. You can also refresh your browser and check that your microphone is connected.

Why is UNSW running this pilot?

Mentor AI is an AI-powered solution developed by Pengguin (a third party also known as iSpeak and SpeakDuo), with inputs from UNSW College. The tool has been used widely at UNSW College and was well-received by its students and staff. This term, Mentor AI is being piloted in a small number of courses at UNSW. The pilot aims to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of using Mentor AI in enhancing the spoken language capabilities of UNSW students. Your use of the solution and feedback will help UNSW assess whether it should be adopted by UNSW widely.

Who can see my recordings and feedback?

Your recordings and the feedback provided are personal to you. Upon signing in, Mentor AI will assign a unique user ID to you which is different to your zID. Your recordings and associated feedback are visible to the teaching staff under the Mentor AI-assigned user ID only – your teacher(s) will not be able to identify you at ALL times.

At the end of the term, the Pro-Vice Chancellor Education project team (who are not teaching staff) will match your recordings and associated feedback to your zID for evaluation purposes. Any reports arising from the evaluation will be strictly on aggregated or non-identifiable basis.

However, if you would like to discuss your spoken performance and/or the feedback provided by Mentor AI, please email the project team via [email protected]. The project team are not teaching staff nor involved in any marking of the assessments in your course. Rather, they are language support specialists who can help with your language queries.

If you have any privacy concerns or questions, please contact [email protected]

What data is being collected in Mentor AI?

  • Your zID: Your zID will be used to enable Single Sign-On only. It will not be connected to your recordings and associated feedback for your course(s) teaching team.
  • Your actions within the Mentor AI interface: These include your audio recordings and your interactions with the feedback, resources and the support chat embedded in the solution. This data is collected to tailor language support and for evaluation purposes.
  • Voluntary feedback responses: After each use, you will be invited to rate the usefulness of the feedback provided to you and provide open-ended comments. These are anonymous and will not link to your zID.

How will my data be used?

Your data will be used solely within the project to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of using Mentor AI in enhancing the spoken language capabilities of UNSW students and assess whether it should be adopted by UNSW widely. Only the project team has access to the raw data and we will remove all data that might identify you. Any reports arising from the evaluation will be strictly on aggregated or non-identifiable basis. No individual students will be identified at ALL times.

How will my data be stored?

Your recordings and associated feedback will be stored digitally on the solution cloud for 180 days in case you would like to refer back to your past spoken performance and/or feedback for continuous improvements should the solution is to be adopted for UNSW-wide use. After 180 days (from the date of your recording), they will be erased from the system. Data is stored in a database hosted on Microsoft Azure in the Australian Eastern region. All data is encrypted. The audio recordings submitted by students will be destroyed within 180 days after they are created and are not used to train AI models or for any secondary purpose.

Please note: Mentor AI is a matured solution; your data will NOT be used to train its language modelling.

Data about you and from you that are collected for evaluation purposes will be stored digitally in password protected files in the project’s UNSW hosted OneDrive. All evaluation data will be erased after 5 years in accordance with UNSW guidelines.
