As winter approaches, students are encouraged to have a flu vaccine. These are now available at the UNSW Health Service and are free for all UNSW students and staff.
Flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness with symptoms including fever and chills, a cough and sore throat, and muscle aches and pains. Learn more about flu symptoms at NSW Health.
You are also encouraged to consider having an additional COVID-19 booster shot before winter if your last COVID-19 vaccination or confirmed reinfection (whichever is the most recent) was six months ago or more. Learn more about COVID-19 vaccine boosters at UNSW Health or visit HotDoc to make an appointment.
Practise safe behaviours
Many of the COVID-safe behaviours we have been practising for the past couple of years are also effective at slowing the spread of the flu:
- Stay at home if you have any symptoms and avoid close contact with others
- Sneeze into your elbow or cover your face with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
- Clean your hands by washing them often and thoroughly
- Wear a face mask in crowded spaces, especially on public transport.
