Law & Justice Gateway Plus Program

The Law & Justice Gateway Plus Program fosters the inclusion and success of domestic students admitted to UNSW through the Gateway Admission Pathway. This program supports students currently enrolled in Law & Justice undergraduate programs: the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and/or the Bachelor of Criminology & Criminal Justice (BCCJ). From 2025, this program will replace the Law & Justice Textbook Access Scheme.

Eligibility

Eligible students will receive a notification of eligibility for the program via their university email account by 31 January 2025. Eligibility for the program is based on entry to UNSW through the Gateway Admission Pathway Program. Students who were eligible for the Textbook Access Scheme, in previous years, are not automatically eligible for this program.

Students who are eligible for the Law & Justice Gateway Plus Program will gain access to:   

Financial Support for Core Course Textbooks

Eligible students are entitled to $300 per annum to purchase textbooks from the UNSW Bookshop that are required for core courses within the Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Criminology & Criminal Justice programs. Eligible students are to provide their student zID to the UNSW bookshop when making purchases.

Revision Workshops

Gateway Plus Program students will have access to revision workshops for Law and Criminology core courses. These are hosted by academic staff during Study Week of each Term.   

In Weeks 7/8, students can expect an email from the faculty requesting their expressions of interest in revision workshops, to ensure they are coordinated to the needs of each cohort.   

Paid Work Placement Opportunities

Our partner law firms are committed to offering paid work placement opportunities to a diverse range of eligible law students.  

This is an amazing opportunity for students to gain experience in a corporate environment, start building a supportive network in the profession and develop a wide range of skills that will support your career journey! 

Structure and Timeframes  

Opportunities for 2025 will vary in commencement dates from May onwards. Work placements will generally involve working 2 days per week over a 10-week term, although there are some variations to this structure with some firms offering a condensed full-time period over term break. Students will be provided with a firm mentor for the duration of their placement.  

The number of internship opportunities varies between each participating firm. 

2025 Placement Eligibility & Applications  

To be eligible for consideration in 2025, students must have completed a minimum of 48UOC prior to the commencement of Term 1. Work placements are paid by the firms and do not provide course credit.  

All applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by the UNSW Law & Justice Careers Service and interviews will be held with the Careers Service prior to presenting student applications to each firm.

You will be required to complete an application form and upload a cover letter and resume.  

In your cover letter, you are encouraged to address how your diverse background, experiences and perspectives enhance your attributes as a candidate. Remember firms are looking for diversity of students for this program.  

Your cover letter does not need be addressed to a single firm, however you have the opportunity in the application form to indicate if you have a firm/s of preference. You may want to consider addressing your cover letter to the UNSW Law & Justice Careers Service.

Students studying a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice are not eligible to apply for these paid work opportunities however are encouraged to apply to undertake professional internships though the UNSW Co-NNECTIONS Program.  

Career Development Support

We encourage all students to familiarise themselves with, and utilise, the services of the UNSW Law & Justice Careers Service. If students are unsuccessful in securing opportunities for work placement opportunities as part of the program for 2025, we recommend seeking feedback from the Careers Service and scheduling a one-on-one career coaching session. This will help you plan ahead and be more competitive when applying for the 2026 program or other related career opportunities.

Professional Development Workshops

Throughout 2025, law firm Norton Rose Fulbright will be facilitating career development workshops on a range of topics to assist students with personal and professional development skills. 

Workshops are open to all students eligible for the Law & Justice Gateway Plus Program, however, pre-penultimate year students are highly encouraged to attend.  

Tentative 2025 workshop dates are as follows 

Thursday 10th April                        1pm on campus                    Managing Your Wellbeing (open to both LLB and BCCJ students) 

Friday 20th June                             1pm on campus                    Commercial Acumen (open to LLB students only)

Thursday 25th September            Norton Rose Fulbright          Managing Your Personal Brand (open to LLB students only)
