Public Relations & Advertising students, step into the forefront of the advertising world with this potential pathway to a career in the industry. With ex-planner Dr Dan Andrew, you'll learn to analyse audience data, make strategic decisions on media placements, and understand the intricacies of the digital and traditional media landscapes and how to best use media to connect with your audience.

Back in Term 1 2024: MDIA2014 Time, Space, and Experience 

Time, space, and experience are essential elements of media production, which means having skills and knowledge in how they work is vital for media practitioners. In this hands-on production course with video artist and DJ Dr Tom Smith, you will work with time, space, and experience as you learn and practice fundamental concepts and techniques for graphic design, animation and interaction design.

New in Term 2 2024: MDIA2009 Video Journalism 

If you’ve already taken MDIA2008 Broadcast Journalism, some of this course will be familiar, but in this new, video-focused version you’ll gain a richer and deeper hands-on understanding of how to do video journalism in front of and behind the camera. With ex-BBC and ABC journalist Farhana Dawood, gain hands-on experience in the skills needed to outline shows, record in the field, and edit and publish video journalism.

Revamped in Term 2 2024: MDIA2010 Interactive Storytelling 

This course with video artist and DJ Dr Tom Smith replaces the Screen Production course, Serious Games. Stories can take many forms. From video games to brand experiences and chat bots, interactive storytelling requires us to tell stories in ways that depart from traditional, linear narratives. In this hands-on production course, you will learn and apply skills in interactive storytelling and experience design, while investigating and analysing examples of playful, experimental, and innovative interactive media.

New in Term 2 2024: MDIA3090 Media Interventions, Activism and Advocacy 

Want to make change in the world of media or use media to make change in the world? In this course taught by A/Prof Tanja Dreher, you'll learn to understand and analyse a range of contemporary and historical projects and practices for media change, and develop your own skills and capacities as a media change maker. Learn how practices of media activism and advocacy have to take into account issues ranging from the politics of voice and listening to the politics of humanitarian intervention, and how such activism involves confronting prevailing norms and orthodoxies.

New in Term 3 2024: MDIA2007 Digital Analytics for PR&A 

This new course in Public Relations & Advertising gives you a practical foundation in the digital and data analytics that are the foundation of modern communication strategy. With Dr Lewen Wei, an expert in computational research and methods, you will learn how to effectively measure important audience and organisational behaviours; enhance persuasive storytelling with data visualisation and actionable insights; and engage critical thinking about ethical and responsible data analytics when used to inform strategic communication practices.

Revamped in Term 3 2024: MDIA2008 Radio and Podcast Journalism 

Replacing the old Broadcast Journalism course, this MDIA2008 Radio and Podcast Journalism pairs with the new Video Journalism course to give Comms & Journalism students a stronger grasp of the skills and knowledge needed for audio journalism. With Farhana Dawood (BBC and ABC), you will gain hands-on experience in the skills needed to outline shows, record in the field, and edit and publish audio, including podcast-style interviews and live shows.
