UNSW will shut down operations from 5pm, Monday 23 December 2024 and reopen Monday 6 January 2025.
Most UNSW services will be unavailable during the University Shutdown period for Christmas and New Year. Emergency and mental health support services are available for students during this time. All standard university operations will reopen on Monday 6 January 2025.
Mental Health Support
If you're not feeling like your usual self, feeling anxious, lonely, stressed or your mood is low and you want to talk to someone about it, support is available anytime during the day or night. Here are some of the options available to you:
To speak to someone now:
- UNSW Mental Health Support: Call the UNSW Mental Health Support line on 02 9385 5418 (24/7) or text with a counsellor on 0485 826 595 (5pm-9am weekdays, 24/7 on weekends/public holidays and during the shutdown period)
To make an appointment:
- UNSW Psychology and Wellness: Request an appointment with mental health clinicians at Psychology and Wellness, who will work out the best support for you. This may be a psychologist at UNSW or a referral to another service. This service is available until 5pm on Monday 23 December 2024, and will re-open at 9am on Monday 6 January 2025.
Not sure who to speak to?
- UNSW Student Support Advisor: Book an appointment with a Student Support Advisor to get advice on uni life, wellbeing, academic performance and study skills, UNSW procedures, financial management or if you need help but don't know where to go. Appointments are available either side of the university shutdown period.

Emergency Services
- Medical emergency or self-harm/suicide attempt: Call 000 or go to your nearest public hospital emergency room immediately
- On-Campus Emergency Support: If you are on campus and need emergency support call On-Campus Emergency Support at 9385 6666
- If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide: Call the Suicide Call Back Service (available 24 hours/7 days a week) on 1300 659 467 or use the online chat function
