It’s important to understand UNSW’s lockdown protocol to help you better prepare in case of an emergency lockdown.
A lockdown is when UNSW identifies an active threat to the UNSW community. This may be a threat where someone is actively trying to hurt people on or around campus.
When a lockdown is initiated:
-
Building perimeter doors will be secured to protect students.
-
A message will be broadcasted across affected areas.
-
Additional information may be provided via SafeZone SMS alert.
Why do we do lockdown exercises?
Lockdown exercises help you become familiar with what you’ll need to do if a genuine threat situation occurs. UNSW is committed to creating a safe and secure campus and regularly conduct lockdown exercises to prepare students.
What to do during a lockdown?
During a lockdown the aim is to remove yourself from danger by being out of sight.
-
Listen for instructions that will broadcast to your location on campus
-
Hide under desks, behind closed doors, and away from windows.
-
If you’re outside - escape the danger area.
-
Turn off lights and lock or barricade doors if possible.
-
Remain calm, quiet and switch phones to silent mode.
-
Do not open doors or let anyone into a room once you are locked down.
-
Follow instructions from Security, the Emergency Management Team, and Police.
-
Only move from your location when told to do so by Police.
-
