Lockdown preparedness | What you need to know

Published:

It’s important to understand UNSW’s lockdown protocol to help you better prepare in case of an emergency lockdown.

A lockdown is when UNSW identifies an active threat to the UNSW community. This may be a threat where someone is actively trying to hurt people on or around campus.

When a lockdown is initiated:

  1. Building perimeter doors will be secured to protect students.

  1. A message will be broadcasted across affected areas.

  1. Additional information may be provided via SafeZone SMS alert.

Why do we do lockdown exercises?

Lockdown exercises help you become familiar with what you’ll need to do if a genuine threat situation occurs. UNSW is committed to creating a safe and secure campus and regularly conduct lockdown exercises to prepare students.

What to do during a lockdown?

During a lockdown the aim is to remove yourself from danger by being out of sight.

  • Listen for instructions that will broadcast to your location on campus

  • Hide under desks, behind closed doors, and away from windows.

  • If you’re outside - escape the danger area.

  • Turn off lights and lock or barricade doors if possible.

  • Remain calm, quiet and switch phones to silent mode.

  • Do not open doors or let anyone into a room once you are locked down.

  • Follow instructions from Security, the Emergency Management Team, and Police.

  • Only move from your location when told to do so by Police.

  • If you are in immediate danger or you have been harmed call security 93856666 or press the ALERT button in your SafeZone App.
