If you repeatedly and unsuccessfully attempt the same course or course rule, it is important that you seek academic advice at the earliest opportunity.

What is a course rule?

A course rule is defined as courses that are equivalent for the purpose of determining whether a student has satisfied a particular academic requirement of the program. For example, a student may be required to select either Mathematics 1A or Higher Mathematics 1A, and either course will count towards the same rule within the program requirements.

What are the rules?

  • If you fail the same course or course rule twice, you must seek academic advice from your Course Authority prior to enrolling in the following semester/term. This provides you with an opportunity to access appropriate support services and resources to enable you to successfully complete the course or course rule.
  • If you fail the same course or course rule three times, you must seek advice from your Program Authority before you re-enrol in the course or course rule. Meeting with your Program Authority provides you with an opportunity to discuss your suitability to the program prior to enrolling in the following semester/term.
  • If you fail the same course or course rule four times, your enrolment in your program will be terminated. If your enrolment in a program is terminated due to repeat fails in a course or course rule, you have the right to appeal that termination to the Re-Enrolment Appeal Committee.
  • PW grades are not counted in the calculation of maximum repeat fails.

What is the process?

Following the release of results at the end of semester/term, you will receive an email to your student email account requesting that you meet with an academic advisor if you fall into one of the following categories:

  1. You have failed the same course or course rule twice;
  2. You have failed the same course or course rule three times; or
  3. You have failed the same course or course rule four times.

It is important that you meet with your academic advisor, ideally by the end of week 1 but no later than the end of week three of the following semester/term.
