Logging in to Moodle

Moodle is the primary Learning Management System (LMS) at UNSW. This is where you will find all your course materials, relevant lecture recordings, assignments and much more.

You can access Moodle via the Moodle Login page.
 

Logging in

Moodle can be accessed via web browser (Google Chrome, Safari) on your computer or phone. The Moodle mobile app is not supported by UNSW and will not work.

SESSION TIMEOUT:
If you are inactive in Moodle for a substantial period of time, your session will time out. When you next access Moodle, the Login page will display with the message: Your session has timed out. Please log in again.

FORGOT PASSWORD?
If you've forgotten your password, please visit UNSW Identity Manager.

Access a Moodle Course and Logging out

Once you are logged into Moodle, you will be directed to your Moodle Dashboard, where your courses can be accessed.

Note: your courses will usually appear in Moodle 24-48 hours after enrolment via MyUNSW. However, some lecturers may keep courses hidden until the classes start. Contact your lecturer if you cannot see the course after the class start date.

 

To access your course, simply click on the course name card to access it.

It is important to log out of Moodle and other UNSW applications so that other people using the same computer cannot access your personal data such as marks. Once you have logged out of Moodle, close the web browser.

To log out of Moodle, go to your profile picture and click 'Log out' in the dropdown:

If you are logged into more than one Single-Sign-On (wSSO) enabled application, be aware that your data is still accessible unless you close all browser windows. You will be prompted to switch to another wSSO application or shut down all applications at once.

Be security aware — do not allow browsers in computer labs or in the Library to remember your login credentials.

What to do when your login fails?

1. You may not have entered your User ID or Password correctly.

  • In the USER ID field, ensure that you have typed a "z" before your student number. (Eg. z1234567)

  • Your PASSWORD (your zPass) is case-sensitive. Check on your keyboard if Caps Lock is on or off.


2. You may not be currently enrolled in an online course.

You must have accepted an offer and have an active program record to have access to Moodle.


3. You have just accepted your offer, recently changed programs, or updated your enrolment in the current term.

Your online access may not have been updated yet. Allow 2 working days for this to be completed. If after 2 working days you are still unable to log in contact The Nucleus: Student Hub


4. You have recently discontinued or graduated from your program but would like to access previous course content.

Graduates retain Moodle access for up to 90 days, after which the access cannot be reinstated. The Nucleus: Student Hub may be able to help you assess your requirements and provide recommendations.


5. You are also unable to log in to other services (e.g. myUNSW) despite having correct zID and zPass

If you have not already checked, it is recommended to try logging into another UNSW service such as myUNSW.

If you cannot login to other UNSW services alongside Moodle, the IT Service Centre will be able to help you review and resolve access issues. You can also check Identity Manager for Students for more information and self-help guides.

 

System Requirements

To run Moodle effectively you should, as a minimum, use the system components listed on this page. If you do not, Moodle may still work but some functionality may be lost.

Operating System

Recommended: Windows 10, Mac OSX High Sierra, iPad IOS10 or higher

It is not recommended to use older versions of operating systems that are out of support such as Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.

Mobile devices

At present, the Moodle Mobile app is not supported at UNSW due to poor performance. If you would like to access Moodle on a mobile device, we recommend using the device web browser unless you are completing an assessment or activity that has a grading component.
If you are completing an assessment or activity that has a grading component, we recommend that you use Moodle through a computer browser.

Internet Speed

Use a broadband connection through USB wireless modem, ADSL2+, T1/T2, fibre optic or cable with the speed:

  • Viewing lecture recordings or conferencing - at least 5MB/sec

  • Viewing images and webpages - at least 2MB/sec 

Dial-up access will be significantly slower, and we do not recommend it for using Moodle.

Internet Browsers

Compatible browsers include:

  • Google Chrome 32 bit version 8x or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Windows)
  • Safari 14 or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Mac)

Note that add-ons and toolbars can affect any browser's performance.

MS Internet Explorer is not recommended

If you have any difficulty accessing UNSW Moodle, please check that you are using one of the supported browsers above before contacting The Nucleus: Student Hub.

Settings

We recommend that the following be enabled:

  • Cookies
  • Pop-ups (in both Internet browser and security software)
  • Javascript

Other

Plug-ins

Adobe has stopped distributing and updating Flash Player as of 31 December 2020 (“EOL Date”). It is recommended to uninstall the Flash Player.

Resource viewing

We recommend that you use the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

To view all the resources uploaded to Moodle, you will likely need to have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or an equivalent (e.g. Open Office, Viewer) installed.

Security

With all firewalls, ensure that you enable uploading of files.

FAQ

How to access courses with the YXXX prefix (ASU Courses)

Courses with the YXXX prefix (e.g., YMED1001 or YENG5582) are delivered by Arizona State University (ASU). To access these courses, you need to log into the ASU learning management system using your ASU-issued student ID number and password (not your UNSW zID and zPass).
